IPs and LCs have finally taken central stage in international climate and biodiversity policy. Now is the time to unpack the ‘How’. In this panel discussion, Rainforest Foundation Norway and the indigenous and local partners on the frontline of the fight against deforestation, will spotlight innovative solutions currently underway at very large scales in pristine rainforest areas, deep in the Amazon and Congo basin.
Driving binational co-management models for the long-term protection of indigenous people in voluntary isolation on the Peru/Brazil border, a direct financing instrument (Community Fund for Forests) in DRC’s intact rainforest areas and forest economy alternatives (ForEco) across the Brazilian Amazon, they can deliver major contributions to climate and biodiversity targets if- (or rather) once protected.
These solutions, for and by IP and LCs, have the potential to mobilize international funds and channel them to indigenous and local communities where they are most needed and at minimum transaction costs. Yet, funding is still lagging relative to the need.
The scale of the challenge is tremendous, but so are the climate and biodiversity rewards.
