203. Moving forward the idea of a Great Green Wall of cities against climate change: 11:00am – 12:30pm
Event time: 11:00am – 12:30pm
Location: Park Hub West, Convene, 101 Park Avenue
Event organizer: Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN
Climate change increases exposure of city-regions to droughts, heatwaves, extreme winds, floods and landslides, affecting hundreds of millions of people. Forest-based solutions (FBS) helped strengthen cities’ resilience and support sustainable urban development. They support climate change adaptation by cooling the environment, protecting soils, preserving watersheds and supplying forest products to urban dwellers. The proposed Great Green Wall of Cities requires funds, technical capacity, engagement of local communities, integration in urban plans and dialogue with existing landscape restoration interventions. After a brief introduction, in groups, we will discuss resource mobilization opportunities, technical and policy challenges for FBS implementation and integration with existing restoration initiatives. The outcome of the event will help partners shape their project idea, expand their partnership and identify next steps towards the development and implementation of the project.
