Grasslands and Savannahs are forgotten landscapes in conservation action. They offer carbon sequestration opportunities at an unparalleled scale while supporting food production, biodiversity, ecosystem services and have a high potential to contribute to greenhouse gas mitigation. Grasslands store three times more carbon than tropical rainforests.

They are essential for food security and maintaining rural and indigenous cultures. Most are highly productive economically, supporting communities that depend on livestock for food and wealth.

The event will explore how grassland management could contribute to 1.5 degree climate target which would mean to include efforts to maintain ecosystem services, restore natural grassland habitats and eliminate conversion of grasslands and savannahs.

The main focus will be on the role of livestock production in grasslands and savannahs. Livestock production can co-exist with wildlife and safeguard ecosystem services, but it has to be managed in a sustainable way. We will explore the knowledge of sustainable livestock and especially beef production, and will present successful nature-based solutions driven by the private sector and governments, to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable managed grassland and savannahs.

Corporate action in supply chains, sector wide transformation, industry commitments and on-ground projects will be showcased to demonstrate possible climate action in the livestock industry and its contribution for the 1.5 degree climate target.

The discussion will tackle consumption patterns and the relationship between increasing demand and increased threats.
