Global demand for agricultural commodities such as soy and palm oil is driving tropical forest loss, destroying a crucial asset in the fight against climate change. Many retailers and consumer goods companies have made commitments to remove deforestation from their supply chains, but are struggling to make these commitments a reality. Forestopoly pits four supermarket teams against each other in a race to minimise their impact on tropical forests. Participants are invited to join a team and embrace the challenge to make their supply chain deforestation-free, moving around a giant board, sourcing soy and palm oil products. But buyers beware – every purchase comes with a deforestation risk. As the game progresses, new regulations, natural events, and supplier initiatives shape the market, putting pressure on budgets and raising the stakes. Teams can trade amongst themselves to meet their needs, with the winning team, the supermarket with the lowest deforestation tally. The game is designed to engage participants from across civil society, companies, financial institutions and governments in the challenge of eradicating deforestation – raising awareness of the contribution of companies’ policy commitments, on-the-ground initiatives, and transparency tools in making progress.
