203. Mapping nature and carbon: The burning truth: 10:30am – 11:30am

This event will be a “show and tell” of new analysis by The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the National Trust that assesses the climate change implications of nature-rich areas in the UK. The analysis quantifies the carbon content of nature-rich habitat and projects carbon sequestration potential in protected land. The event will explore opportunities to maximize nature-based climate solutions through the protection and restoration of important areas. The presentation of the mapping work will be followed by an interactive discussion with a panel of experts, including a UK government representative, a youth activist, a scientist, and a policy expert.

We will explore the following questions:
1. How can protecting and restoring nature help to tackle the climate crisis?
2. How can protecting nature help the UK and other countries decarbonize?
3. What are some of the barriers to taking actions that deliver win-win outcomes in terms of avoided emissions, increased sequestration, biodiversity conservation, other ecosystem services and societal benefits, and how can we overcome these?

We would like to reach out to partners, champions and new audiences to build momentum towards better integration of nature-climate-sustainable development objectives in the run-up to 2020, when countries are expected to sign a new deal at a Global Summit for Nature and raise their levels of ambition to tackle the climate crisis.
