204. Press Conference to launch EverGreening the Earth – the Global Campaign: 11:00am – 12:30pm

EverGreening the Earth is a global campaign to overcome the climate crisis while alleviating poverty and hunger, and caring for the land.  It aims to capture and store in the landscape 20 billion tons of CO2 annually by 2050. Sectoral leaders will be gathering at this press conference to share how the campaign will be supported and its objectives delivered.

The campaign is being launched by the Global EverGreening Alliance, with more than twenty-five of its member organizations, including many of the largest development NGOs and conservation NGOs working around the world. Through the capacity of the Alliance’s members and their thousands of projects, the hundreds of grassroots organizations and movements with which the Alliance works, and will the support of UN Agencies, multilateral banks and foundations, governments, and the global public, together, we can make good on such an audacious goal.

The campaign’s targets and projected impacts are science and evidence-based. Calculations are based on landscapes that will be enhanced with further vegetation, and the campaign engages and empowers vulnerable local communities to adopt land restoration practices because they can see the real benefits – improved food production and livelihoods for the world’s poorest people, particularly women and children.

We must act now, ambitiously, together, and as a global community!
