Due to decades of racism, redlining and disinvestment, low-income communities and communities of color in the United States are disproportionately impacted by almost every dimension of climate change. American Forests’ Tree Equity Score shows that communities of color have on average 38% less tree canopy cover and are 10°F hotter than nearby majority-white communities. Broad investments in nature-based solutions are essential to addressing these equity gaps – and trees are one of the most powerful solutions to effectively move the needle on environmental justice.
The Tree Equity Alliance is a new movement of government, nonprofit, and philanthropic partners united by a shared belief that a resilient future must include an equitable distribution of urban trees as well as leveraging collective expertise and resources to realize that vision. The panel will invite the audience to join the Alliance in charting a path for permanent investment in the promise of trees and nature for every person in every neighborhood. It’s time to invest in Tree Equity.
