103. A people-first approach to nature-based solutions: CARE-WWF alliance climate adaptation experiences: 9:00am – 10:00am

This event will focus on the urgency of identifying mutually supportive nature-based and community-based adaptation strategies for developing countries in the lead up to pivotal 2019 and 2020 events. Conservation of ecosystems is essential for both climate change mitigation and adaptation, benefiting people and nature. However, even if we reach zero net emissions by target dates, accelerating climate change will affect people and biodiversity, with disproportionate impacts on vulnerable communities in developing countries, especially women. Nature-based adaptation strategies that build resilience of both ecosystems and communities are critically needed.

The CARE-WWF Alliance will host a panel discussion on integrating Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA) and Community-Based Adaptation (CBA) in a landscape approach at the poverty-environment nexus, with a focus on gender equity. Panelists will discuss the benefits, challenges, and trade-offs of linking EbA and CBA strategies and the implications for designing and implementing integrated landscape-level strategies.

We will draw on ten years of CARE-WWF Alliance and related experience: in Nepal, on landscape-level adaptation using a watershed approach that engages communities; in the MesoAmerican reef, on marine management for coastal adaptation; in Africa, on CBA; and globally, on gender-transformative adaptation.
