In 2015, 21 young people filed a constitutional climate lawsuit, Juliana v. United States, against the U.S. government. These young people argue that the government, through its refusal to mitigate climate change and its devastating effects, has violated their constitutional and inalienable rights to life, liberty and property as the youngest generation, whilst also failing to protect essential public resources. This ongoing case, also known as ‘Youth v. Gov’, underscores the potential for litigation to push the political envelope and start conversations on accountability and responsibility around climate change and the environment. It also exemplifies the perspective that youth have as a vulnerable population which is and will continue to be disproportionately impacted by the climate and ecological crises. Join us for an open and lively panel discussion on “Mobilising for Climate & Ecological Justice,” hosted by Youth4Nature and Our Children’s Trust, and featuring ‘Juliana’ plaintiffs. The event will touch on how the ‘Youth v. Gov’ case originated, its process, and its current standpoint. This conversation will explore the views and experiences of youth plaintiffs on navigating the justice system within the current U.S. political climate, and on mobilizing for climate and ecological justice by addressing U.S. human rights crises in tangent with the climate and ecological crises. There will be time for the audience to ask questions and converse with the plaintiffs.
