302. Leading the way: Indigenous peoples, sustainable agriculture, and food systems for climate resilience: 1:00pm – 2:30pm

Event time: 1:00pm – 2:30pm
Location: Madison Hub South, Convene, 101 Park Avenue
Event organizer: Indigenous Peoples Major Group for Sustainable Development

Several international bodies, including the Center for Biological Diversity and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, have recognized the importance respecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples as a fundamental precept to develop meaningful and effective responses to Climate Change. This session will be centered on initiatives to secure rights to protect forest, agroforests, rivers and watershed ecosystems for healthy food. Eight dynamic presenters will share regenerative food systems and agricultural practices of indigenous peoples from different landscapes and discuss how these can inform fundamental practices necessary for climate resilient agricultural production around the globe. Topics covered will include: protecting and propagating indigenous seeds; shifting cultivation/ rotational agriculture for soil and nutrient management; innovations in sustainable agriculture and landscape management/ecosystem management (includes livestock and pasture systems) for food sovereignty/security; the impacts of climate change on indigenous peoples’ food systems and sustainable agricultural practices; and actions of indigenous peoples, especially women and youth groups, to promote their sustainable agricultural practices and food systems using traditional knowledge and ecosystems management. The presentations will cover cross-cutting concerns directly linked to achieving biological diversity, mitigating and adapting to Climate Change, and the Sustainable Development Goals.
