401. What evidence do we need to take natural climate solutions to scale? An impact evaluation roadmap: 1:15pm – 2:45pm

Evidence about the impacts of Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) on people and the environment is critical for policymakers who want to invest their limited resources in the most effective, cost-effective, and scalable approaches. In the past three decades, rigorous impact evaluation techniques have been widely used in international development as a tool to help policymakers identify and scale highly impactful programs. Yet, these approaches have not been as widely used to measure the impact of NCS to generate evidence and inform policy, particularly in developing countries, which will be disproportionately hurt by climate change and have fewer resources to address it.

During this interactive session, CI and J-PAL will briefly share an opportunity for catalyzing a new body of cutting-edge social science and impact evaluations to guide global investments in NCS. We will then invite the audience to share ideas about which topics, questions, and interventions are highest priority to generate evidence on to help shape a global research agenda for NCS. The research agenda will include strategies to combat the drivers of deforestation, conserve carbon-rich ecosystems, build climate-positive jurisdictions and supply chains, restore degraded forests, land, and seascapes, and maximize the adaptation benefits of ecosystems for vulnerable communities.
