Join us for a presentation of the report “The Ocean as a Solution for Climate Change: 5 Opportunities for Action” from the Expert Group of the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy (HLP). The HLP is an ambitious effort led by 14 serving Heads of Government to highlight the importance of a healthy ocean in realizing future economic opportunities and achieving Sustainable Development Goal 14.

Responding to the launch of the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate, this report aims to present the ocean and ocean-based economy as part of the solution set necessary to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. To do so, it quantifies the potential contribution of five prominent ocean-based subsectors – energy, transport, nature-based, food and carbon capture and storage (CCS) – to contribute to keeping temperatures to a 1.5C and 2C pathway. The report also considers the impacts (both co-benefits and trade-off) of taking action in each of the ocean-based subsectors in terms of delivering the Sustainable Development Goals.

This TED-style talk, will allow the authors of the report and other key representatives from the HLP to examine and discuss its findings and explore what the implications are for policymakers.

Participants will include Jane Lubchenco (Oregon State University and Co-chair of the HLP Expert Group) and Ove Hoegh-Guldberg (University of Queensland). Other participants will be confirmed closer to the event.
