Conservation International and Nature4Climate applaud Costa Rica’s leadership in addressing climate change. If we don’t address climate change, little else will matter – and recent science corroborates the incredible urgency to act within the next decade in order to avoid irreversible and catastrophic warming. Costa Rica’s bold plan responds to this climate crisis with the required level of ambition and rigor. By putting the country on a pathway consistent with the science, including a credible plan to reach net zero emissions by 2050, Costa Rica has put forth its commitment to the planet and sets a clear example for the global community. We are especially encouraged that Costa Rica’s plan recognizes the role of forests in addressing climate change. The protection and restoration of forests is critical to addressing climate change – we simply won’t meet our climate goals without them. Our hope and inspiration for solving climate change comes from the knowledge that countries like Costa Rica have shown that protecting nature, solving climate change, and developing the economy are not incompatible.
