From Angola in southern Africa to Angola Bay in North Carolina, The Nature Conservancy is leading efforts to protect and restore peatlands—one of the planet’s most powerful natural climate solutions. Although peatlands cover only about 3% of Earth’s surface, they play an outsized role in regulating the carbon and water cycles.

These unique ecosystems store one-quarter of the world’s soil carbon—more than all the carbon contained in global forest biomass combined. By protecting and rewetting peatlands, we can slow climate change and safeguard communities from its worst impacts, reducing the risks of floods, droughts, and wildfires.

Join scientists from TNC’s Africa and North Carolina programs as they share innovative strategies for mapping, prioritizing, and restoring these rare habitats—critical for both biodiversity and climate resilience.
