Friday 1st December 2023
11:00 - 12:00
Renowned experts and officials will convene at the COP28 Climate-Forward Ocean Conservation Strategies event to discuss the Mangrove and Coral Reef Breakthroughs within the broader context of international agreements, as well as strategies to bolster the resilience of marine biodiversity. As the coming UN Ocean Conference 2025 will offer a pivotal stocktaking point for ocean-related targets midway to 2030, this event will further feature a road map to Nice and an overview of ambitions.
Taking place on 1 December, from 11am-12pm GST at the Nature-Positive Pavilion in the COP28 Blue Zone, this session will be co-hosted by Bloomberg Philanthropies, Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Race to Resilience/High-Level Climate Champions, Ocean & Climate Platform, and the Global Mangrove Alliance (GMA).
Pivotal to mobilizing action to deliver on the global ambitions of the Sharm el Sheikh Adaptation Agenda and the Global Biodiversity Framework, the Mangrove and Coral Reef Breakthroughs - established under the High-Level Climate Champions and the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action Ocean Breakthroughs - collectively aim to:
1.) Secure the future of 15 million hectares of mangroves globally by 2030 by mobilizing US $4 billion through joint action to halt mangrove losses, restore half of recent losses, double global mangrove protection, and ensure long-term sustainable financing for all existing mangroves; and
2) Secure the future of at least 125,000 km2 of shallow-water tropical coral reefs with investments of at least US$12 billion to support the resilience of more than half a billion people globally by 2030.
