Event organizer: Ecuador

This session will showcase the main achievements and progress in Ecuador in reducing deforestation through actions by the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry Agriculture and Livestock, with funds from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and Green Climate Fund (GCF). Through this unique alliance, Ecuador seeks to position itself as a country that generates high-quality agricultural products that are socially and environmentally responsible and deforestation-free.

High-level changes in Ecuador will be generated through multi-stakeholder participation in the implementation of Ecuador´s REDD+ Action Plan, a national public policy, which aims to reduce deforestation in the country. Implementation of the REDD+ Action Plan is supported by the PROAmazonía Programme, an ambitious, five-year, collaborative initiative to transform the agriculture and forestry sectors in the Amazon region. It is an inclusive, cross-sectoral and multi-stakeholder initiative seeking a just transition to sustainable land-use practices to significantly reduce deforestation and restore degraded ecosystems; improve the livelihoods of some of the most impoverished communities in Ecuador; and establish viable economic markets for sustainably produced, deforestation-free products.

The space will be an opportunity to motivate other countries and initiatives to move forward in actions that address climate change, reduce deforestation and improve people’s living conditions.
